The average price contracted for renewable energy in today's auction by the Brazilian government energy authorities was R$102.18 MW/h - but the average for wind energy was above that level, ensuring that prices for wind didn't fall further than the levels seen last August, when they fell dramatically below the equivalent prices for energy from natural gas.

In today's auction a total of 1.2 GW of energy worth R$10.7bn was contracted. The total includes one sizeable hydro project, UHE SÃO ROQUE, which sold energy at a price of R$91.2 MW/h, pulling the average price down. The auction included two sugarcane biomass (bagass) projects. Wind energy accounted for a total 39 projects, all of which have now aquired the right to sell energy from 2016 under the terms of the A-5 auction.

The most successful states securing contracts to build wind projects were Rio Grande do Norte (12 projects, accounting for 34% of the total wind capacity) and Ceará (15 projects, making up 31% of the energy contracted to be sold from wind). Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul each secured five projects. Maranhão, with two wind projects, ranks as a newcomer to the wind energy industry in Brazil. Successful project developers included Bioenergy (in Maranhão), EDP Brazil and Gestamp (in Rio Grande do Norte), Voltalia (in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará), Enerfin (in Rio Grande do Su)l and Formoso (in Bahia).

Amongst the wind projects, the only farms which saw average prices fall below R$100 were those of the EDP Brasil projects in Rio Grande do Norte, which all fell to R$97 MW/h.
