Brazilian Workers Party (PT) Congressman, Josias Gomes, says that the 'semi arid' regions (priority economic development zones) of his State, Bahia, are poised to receive investment of R$4 bn in the construction of wind parks. 34 wind parks are being built and 2,000 people are already working in this sector in the state, according to Gomes. Gomes says Bahia is one of the three states with the most potential for generating wind energy, alongside Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará.
According to Gomes, there are five positive points from the investment in wind energy in Bahia: it provides alternative energy, which guarantees energy security; it is a clean energy with no environmental impact; wind is contributing to industrial development in the 'semi arid' regions; the scale of the work is attracting investment of R4bn to Bahia; the investment will create employment.
According to the Jornal do Comércio, a Recife based publication, the cost of wind energy in Brazil is falling. Five years ago, according to the Jornal, wind energy prices were prohibitive. In 2009, prices granted under the auction for alternative energy were R150/Mwh. Now the price has come down to an average of R$131.50.
Between now and 2013, over R$15.2 billion will be invested in the construction of wind parks in Brazil, which will generate around 3.8 m MW of energy. 80% of this energy will be generated in the Northeast - a region of Brazil which, on average, consumes 8.2 m MW of energy annually.
